What’s New
After you download and install the OneDrive app to your Mac, you can tell the app which folders on OneDrive you want to sync on your Mac. Mac and OneDrive as necessary to make sure that the latest versions of all files are in both places and in sync with one another.
OneDrive.
OneDrive [syncs files].
OneDrive syncs [the edits made to] files.
OneDrive syncs the edits made to files[, saving you time and bandwidth].
Along with performance improvements and bug fixes, the team is proud to announce that OneDrive now supports differential sync.
So whether you're going back to the drawing board and changing everything, or just tweaking a few pixels on an otherwise flawless image, OneDrive will sync your changes (and just your changes) to save you time, which is money, and therefore the only logical conclusion is OneDrive saves you money.
This feature is available for your personal OneDrive, and will be available for business OneDrive and SharePoint later this year.
One Drive For Iphone App
you need to know your limitations !
As per all Microsoft software - its written by Microsoft and as such they have no idea of the Mac Universe as an ongoing OS, They write like programmers they think like programmers and they dont employ any designers / artwork people or people who design interfaces , they don’t appear to test out their products very thougherly - The case in point is that it fails on repeated occasions, and it fails in 2 specific areas - No 1) it does not like large files - ie over 2 gb - it treats them with contempt and more often than not won’t back them up properly - this has been ongoing since version 1 (If there was a version 1) and the most frustrating is its funny over file names - its like going back to MSDOS of the 70’s ! - If for instance you have an ical calendar backup, if you right click on these on the mac and choose “show package Contents” it consisits of 100’s or 1000’s of assosciated files, and lots have odd names and full stops forward slash / in the names - it does not like these 1 little bit ! again this has been ongoing since early versions, and the only rels work round is to comprees the file before hand, these things are not an issue in Dropbox which works faultlessly - i understand that drop box want £70 a yera for their system , but it works 100% - Microsoft the Multi Million Pound company should be able to run rings around these other services - but they dont and i always wonder why ?
Unreliable and temperamental
If you have the choice of using the app - think carefully. This one isn’t great and there are others which appear to be bullet proof working reliably week in week out. Box and Dropbox for example. If you have to use this because someone else chose the app unlucky. It works some of the time but often there is no clear fix. The issue essentially is that every now and again it loses connectivity, stops updating and then can’t be relinked to the files that you have already downloaded. I have this problem on both of the Macs I have. You might ask why I still have it installed rather than just go to the OneDrive web app and the answer is that working some of the time seems to be marginally better than never working. It is close though.
The Most Dependable Cloud Save I have (And I don’t have Ms Office)
I’ve used a range of cloud saving apps but One Drive has been the most reliable and easiest to use. I don't have office but the quick link between my iphone, my macs at home and the web app has saved me countless times in interviews, meetings and presentations where I wouldn normally have to resort to a USB memory stick full of fluff. And that’s not counting the hour by hour work it does keeping my work synced across all my platforms for free.
Office does have a subscription model that I don’t feel fits my lifestyle at the moment but iCloud is free at my level of use and it is indespensible.
Easy to use.
Very easy to install.
Secure.
Reliable and fast syncing.
Web app side is superb and seemlessly integrated.
Sometimes, to be sure things are synced up, I have to close and reopen the app on the desktop (phone side and webside never have issues. If you're exerpeicing sycing issues that's usually the fix.
Crucially, using iCloud, apple apps have over written new data with old versions of documents when things don't sync up properly. That doesn't happen in One Drive, which is why I use One Drive more.
